Effect of Calcium Salts and Calmodulin Antagonists on Pedicel Abscission of Apple Fruitlets

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of various Ca salts and calmodulin antagonists on pedicel abscission of apple fruits. Developing fruits on the ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥/M26 apple tree were removed and the pedicels remained. The pedicels were treated with various Ca salts and calmodulin antagonists. At one time spray of various Ca salts of 0.5% to pedicels, only Ca-acetate delayed pedicel abscission of apple fruits, whereas five times spray of various Ca salts delayed it in all treated Ca salts. Various kind of Ca salts had effect on pedicel abscission of apple fruits in the order of : Ca-acetate $gt; Ca-formate $gt; Ca-hydroxide $gt; Ca-chloride. But little differences were observed in the Ca contents at the pedicels. Five times spray of l.0 mM trifluoperazine and chlorpromazine, Ca-calmodulin binding inhibitors, enhanced pedicel abscission of apple fruit. The mixed spray of them with Ca-acetate tended to decrease pedicel abscission of fruits which was induced by Cacalmodulin binding inhibitors. From these results, it was deduced that pedicel abscission of apple fruits could be controled by a parts of intracellar Ca-calmodulin interaction in cellular level.
